How to Choose The Right Skirt for Your Body Shape

December 22nd, 2008

Not all women have the same figure. What looks good on you might not look good on another woman. You have to choose which type of clothing is flattering to your figure.

When it comes to choosing skirts, here’s your guide to picking what works well with your shape:

Skirts for slim women

For slim frames, opt for bubble skirts to add volume and create the illusion of curves. When picking bubble skirts, choose one whose length is proportionate to your height. This means that the shorter you are, the shorter your skirt should be. Pair a bubble skirt with a top with a bit of volume to maintain a nice proportion. Finish off the look with a fabulous pair of pumps.

Skirts for tall women

For those blessed with supermodel height, opt for high-waisted skirts. High-waisted skirts make you look slimmer yet curvier because it emphasizes the smallest part of the waist. High-waisted skirts are very trendy right now.

Look for ones with cute details such as huge bows or ribbons on the side or rows of buttons down the front. Pair them off with soft, flowy tops with high necklines. Finish off the look with high-heeled booties.

Skirts for curvy women

For women gifted with fabulous curves, choose skirts that will show off your beautiful figure. Go for pencil skirts to flaunt your perfect hour-glass shape. Pair them off with a turtleneck and a pair of fab heels. Pencil skirts also make you look put together with just heels and a dainty clutch to match.

Skirts for pear-shaped women

For pear-shaped women, opt for A-line cuts, pleated or full skirts to make your rear look smaller. Make sure they fall just above your knees to create a stunning proportion.

To make your lower half and upper half appear even more proportionate, go for tops with wide or puffed sleeves. This create a fabulous hour-glass silhouette. Accessorize with a slim belt to emphasize your waist and finish off the look with a pair of cute ballet flats.

Why You Shouldn’t Wear High Heels

December 20th, 2008

Fabulous high heels are a fashionable lady’s wardrobe staple. High heels finish your whole look and make or break your entire appearance. And as fashion icon Victoria Beckham said, “they make you feel so much more confident.”

But, do you know that wearing fab heels very often has a detrimental effect on your feet?

What high heels do to your feet

High heels throw your weight onto the balls of your feet. That may lead to calluses, corns, bunions and even deformity. High heels also throw the body’s center of mass forwards. To make up for this, the spine leans backwards, resulting in back problems.

Today’s sexy heels have become slimmer and slimmer. And this creates a problem. It causes the ankle to become shaky and this may cause ankle sprains.

If you have been wearing high heels regularly for nearly half a year, better get your legs checked. Wearing high heels for this long can cause the calf muscles to shorten and tighten. Your body will make up for the tightness by lowering the arch of the foot, or worse affect the knee, hip or even the back.

What you can do?

If you can, save your high heels for more formal occasions. If you own backless high-heel shoes, save them for especially glamorous parties. These kinds of shoes make your toes claw as you walk, straining your already stressed muscles.

If you do wear high heels all the time, you must compensate for the tightening and shortening your calf muscles go through by doing some stretching. Do this by:

- Standing facing a wall with your feet a foot apart.

- Keep your knees slightly bent.

- Stretch one leg out behind you, keeping your feet flat on the ground.

- Lean towards the wall. You should feel your calf and heel muscles stretching.

- Hold and then return to a standing position.

- Do five sets with each leg.

This exercise also keeps your feet’s proper range of movement and helps keeps them supple.

If you really must wear heels, vary your heel heights. Go for low heels one day, and higher heels the next. Also vary your shoe type. Opt for shoes that have straps over the instep to keep your foot from sliding forward.

If you are required to wear heels at work or are just so used to wearing heels, keep the height at about 4 cm.

Lastly, visit your chiropodist or podiatrist to check for problems.

How to Stay Stylish During Winter

December 15th, 2008

Some people think that winter is a bad time for style and fashion, what with all the layering of clothes that make you look rounder than Frosty the Snowman.

The truth is, winter is actually a great season for dressing up in style - with the right set of clothes, that is.

Fashionable winter jackets and trench coats

Buy fashionable jackets and trench coats. They are actually style essentials. You could easily go from drab to fab in seconds with a fashionable coat. Coats make you look put together even with minimal accessories and a simple hairstyle.

When choosing a coat, make sure it fits your figure perfectly. Also take into consideration your location’s weather. Different areas vary in temperature. Opt for neutral colors such as black, gray and brown, as these colors go well with other colors.

Hats

Hats are a cute addition to your winter outfit. They add ooomph to your whole look. A variety of hats in different colors is ideal, but one or two will do. You should also go for neutral colored hats to match most of your outfits.

Scarves

Scarves serve a dual purpose: they protect you from the chilly winter winds and add personality to your look. Scarves come in a myriad of colors, fabrics and styles. Scarves are also fairly inexpensive. Make sure your scarf goes well with your coat and hat.

Gloves, mittens and handwarmers

The icy winter air makes hands dry and chapped. What better way to protect your hands with stylish yet functional gloves, mittens and handwarmers. Thinner gloves are the most stylish (think Audrey Hepburn), but provide less warmth than the really thick ones.

Consider the weather when choosing your gloves. Make sure also that they match your outfit. If you’re going for warmth, you may opt for handwarmers as they are usually very thick. What’s more, they are stylish and cute in an almost childlike way.

Layering

If you’re not a fan of hideous sweaters, resort to layering clothes instead.

Shoes

When choosing shoes, it is advisable of course to choose those that cover your feet most. Your best option is to wear boots. There is a variety of stylish boots available. Choose from thigh high boots, knee high boots or ankle booties.

Tights and leggings

When wearing skirts or dresses, wear tights or leggings underneath. This protects your legs from the harsh weather and at the same time makes your whole outfit look more appropriate for the chilly season.

Tights and leggings come in all styles, shapes, sizes and colors so you should be able to find one that goes well with your outfit.

How to Look Like Scarlett Johansson

December 8th, 2008

Scarlett Johannson is one of today’s hottest young actresses. Despite being pegged as one of Hollywood’s sexiest actresses, the 24-year old actress has managed to maintain a classy and scandal free career.

Scarlett also has an amazing sense of fashion. Her style is often described as a combination of old Hollywood classic glamour and modern chic.

Here’s how to get Scarlett Johansson’s stunning style

Porcelain complexion

To get Scarlett’s flawless complexion, focus on perfecting your base by first applying a light moisturizer. Next, apply a light foundation and blend well. To hide imperfections and cover dark circles under your eyes, use a concealer. To set your make up, use a bot of translucent powder and let your real skin tone show through.

Eyes

Scarlett’s eyes are very expressive. Open up your peepers by lightly applying powder to your eyelids to get rid of oils. Next, apply a matt pinkish orange eyeshadow over your entire lid. Stop just above your eye socket. Put on gold eye shadow on your eyelids and little on the lower lashline. To make your eyes pop, apply soft black pencil liner to your upper and lash lines and smudge them with a sponge-tipped applicator. Finish off with two coats of mascara for really sultry eyes.

Eyebrows

The actress’s perfectly groomed eyebrows are one of her trademarks. To get Scarlett’s brows, first shape yours by plucking or threading (salons usually offer this service) them or you can get a stencil kit to shape your eyebrows fast. Next, use a mid-brown shade to define your eyebrows’ shape.

Blush

Get the young star’s signature pink lips by using a natural taupe blush. Dot them onto the apples of your cheeks and blend them well to get that healthy, youthful flush. When choosing your cheek tint, go for cream or liquid ones. Powder blushers can be ageing.

Lips

Scarlett’s naturally pouty lips are her sexiest facial asset. To get her signature pout, put on two coats of rose-pink, or red (scarlet) lipstick using a lipbrush. Add a bit of gloss on to the middle of the lips to get a bit sheen. If you have thin lips, there are lip-plumping products available. Avoid dark lip shades as they make your lips appear smaller. After using your lip-plumper, apply lipstick and finish off with a similar toned lipliner to make lips look fuller.

Hair

To get Scarlett’s hair, first you have to go blond (if you aren’t already). It is best to have a professional do it. The actress has an oval-shaped face which means most hairstyles would look good on her.

First, get a layered cut. Layers make a hairstyle look more modern and pulled-together. Next, get Scarlett’s classic hairstyles by using a large curling iron to create loose curls. Wear your hair up by using a glittery clip, and leave a few curly tendrils to frame your face. Or you can wear you hair down in cascading curls.

Dress

Scarlett usually goes for classic (usually from the 40s), figure-hugging pieces to emphasize her hourglass figure. She also opts for corsets and dresses with low necklines.

When wearing casual, go for dark skinny jeans made of stretch denim as this also helps enhance her figure. Scarlett usually pairs jeans with sweaters and finishes off with heels (be it boots or pumps).

Fashion Tips for Grandmothers

December 7th, 2008

Fashion movers have a tendency to forget that not all women are young and slender. Women over 40 are hardly seen in spreads (let along covers) of fashion magazines.

However, just because there’s a lack of attention, that doesn’t mean lovely elderly ladies should look all frumpy and well, old.

Here are a few tips for beautiful older women to be fashionable at their age.

Clothes

Now, just because you’re beginning to lose or have lost your youthful clothes doesn’t mean you have to wear shapeless clothes. Go for classic shapes and silhouettes such as shirtdresses and trenchcoats (avoid shawls as they scream “grandmother”).

Go for solid-colored clothes in colors such as black, white, gray, camel. Don’t be afraid to wear your skirt a little high (around the knee area is appropriate) especially if you have great legs. Turtlenecks are also a good investment. They can be worn anytime and look great at any age. Go for tailored looks with as little fuss as possible (buttons, trims, etc.).

Sensuality

Being sensual is not just for the young. You can be sensual at any age. But unlike younger girls, show off your sensual side by choosing elegant fabrics such as silk, cashmere and fur. Opt for deep colors such as plum, wine, etc.

Makeup

Some older women go about the wrong way of avoiding looking old - by overdoing their makeup. Unfortunately this only makes them look older. Minimalism is the key. Go for a more natural look with a healthy glow.

Hair

Notice how very few older women have long hair. Some women think it’s too fussy to maintain long hair. But there are plenty of styles you can do with long hair: you can have your hair up in a simple ponytail or a French braid.

Handbags

Fortunately, in the handbag department there are plenty of classic designs that are suitable for wider age-range of women. Opt for some of Louis Vuitton’s or Chanel’s updated classics. Choose handbags that are proportionate to your size.

Accessories

Accessories are great at any age. Be creative in wearing your jewelry. Long chain necklaces or a long string of pearls can be used as belts or as hairpieces.

Elderly ladies and older women don’t have to look frumpy and old. Just stay healthy and stylish and you will age gracefully.

Choosing The Best Makeup for Asian Skin Tones

December 2nd, 2008

Though there are a number of “fits all” makeup products available, it is still best to use those that are created specifically for your skin tone. After all, it yields the best results.

If you are Asian or have Asian ancestry, opt for make up that brings out the best in your features.

Here’s how to select the best make up for your skin tone:

Foundation, concealer and powder

Asians have a variety of skin tones. Choose colors that have yellow undertones. For others who have porcelain skin color, opt for a foundation with the lightest cast of pink.

For concealers, opt for one that has a yellow tone a few shades lighter than your foundation. To hide redness, opt for concealers with a lightly green tone.

For powders, opt for a yellow-toned shade. For the porcelain-skinned, opt for a translucent or pale beige with a pink cast.

Blush

When choosing blushes, opt for soft pink, very light bronze and pale apricots. They match your color and add contour to your face.

Eye products

Probably the most distinct feature of Asians are the eyes. Bring out the beautiful almond shape of your eyes with brown or black eyeliners that add definition. Asian eye colors are usually black or brown. Use black eyeshadow to complement your lovely dark eyes.

Go for gradation to add depth. Use the darker shade at the lash line and finish with lightest shade near the eyebrow. If you want to have some color, go for plum, raisin and gray.

For mascaras, use black or dark gray. Curl your hair to make them look longer and thicker and open up your eyes.

Eyebrows products

Use an eyebrow pencil that’s the same color as your natural hair. Darken your eyebrows to add definition.

Lip products

For your lips, opt for raisins, plums, mauves and reds. Avoid pinks and browns as they do not work well with your skin tone. If you have porcelain skin, go for a bluish-red shade.

If you want a bit of color with tinted gloss, go for caramels, mauves and taupes for morning, and choose ruby or coffee shades for night.

Pastel and frosted shades are a no-no for Asian skin as these can make your complexion look flat. Go for softer shades with light shimmer or shine.

Spring 2009’s Hot Hair Trends

November 24th, 2008

Runway hair trends

If the recently concluded international spring-summer 2009 runways were anything to go by (and they most likely, if not definitely, are), then we will be seeing a lot of ‘up’ hairstyles in 2009, at least during its first half.

Most of the international runway shows featured chignons, ponytails and up-dos with headbands, as seen on Yves Saint Laurent’s and Jil Sander’s runway shows. Of course there were the staple long wavy locks, and sleek, straight hair, and messy ‘dos.

Hollywood hair trends

Pixie crops and cropped bobs

Moving away from the runways and into Hollywood, 2008’s women hair trends seemed to be who’s got the shortest hair. Hollywood’s leading ladies, some of whom are known for their flowing tresses, surprised their fans by showing up one day sporting sleek bobs and pixie crops. To cite a few examples, Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham, Katie Holmes, Natalie Portman, Rihanna. In the modeling world, we saw Kate Moss get a shoulder length bob.

Bobs and crops are very bold moves. Women got these ‘dos because they want to stand out. But with every body doing it, what’s a forward thinking female celeb to do?

Trend forecasters say that either these women let their bobs and crops grow or cut them even shorter. Forecasters came up with the “cropped bob”. It’s sort of like a combination of the two 2008 trends. It’s short all over, that may be worn with heavily cut fringes, just like what young Brit model Agyness Deyn, well known for her short ‘dos, is sporting these days.

Trend forecasters also predict that we will see more pixie crops in 2009.

Bobs

For other women who weren’t quite as daring but just as forward thinking and stylish as those who got crops and bobs, they opted for bobs. We saw a lot of Hollywood stars get sleek, middle length ‘dos. These bobs were either fringed, or accented by side-swept bangs. See Hayden Panetierre’s bob, as well as Jenny McCarthy’s, Kate Moss’s and (again) Posh Spice’s.

For 2009, the trend predictors suggest updating the bob with the bed hairstyle (think stylishly messy hair), particularly if your bob is chin length. If you have a longer bob, grow it longer and get the mermaid/40’s wavy style.

Waves and Sleek straight

For the stars who opted to keep their flowing tresses, 2008 saw long wavy locks, long bed hairstyle and sleek, straight ‘dos as seen on Brit model Lily Donaldson, and the rest of the female stars who decided not to part with their long hair.

For 2009, trendspotters believe the wavy and sleek straight hairstyles will still be there (probably until forever). Trendspotters think the wavy lock will be updated (or more accurately ‘retro-fied’) to the mermaid or the 40’s side-part, wavy hair. Fringes and bangs are an option for this look.

Color

As for color, trendspotters believe, peroxide blonde will be a hot color for 2009, as recently seen on Kate Moss.

With the closing of the 2009 Spring-Summer 2009 international runway shows, fashion bible Vogue has seen and compiled what will be next year’s hottest accessories.

Headgear

Spring-Summer 09 runway shows featured various head accessories. For 2009, make sure to get your hand on hats or head scarves or other head accessory. Vogue suggests Louis Vuitton ponytail tubes.

Colors

Gold

Gold seems to be the color favored (not just for accessories but for dresses as well) during the spring-summer fashion shows. Make sure to get something gold for next season, not just jewelry but other accessories too, including gold tone bags, shoes, hair pieces, etc.

Green

Green was another favorite color during the Spring-Summer 2009 runway shows. Make sure to get some green into your accessories drawer by spring next year.

Blue

Blue is another color that frequented 2009 spring-summer runways.

Yellow

Brighten your look for 2009 by getting your hands on some fabulous yellow accessories such as bags and shoes.

Nudes

On the other end of spectrum, some designers favored nude, instead of bright colors. Make nude another accessory color.

Bags

If you want to get with the program, opt for long strapped bags that are slung across the body. For more girly or formal bags, opt for the teeny-tiny, squishy (and really expensive) ones. Check out bag collections from Prada, Miu Miu, Chanel and Louis Vuitton.

Some of the favored materials or canvasses for bags are snakeskin, and even a bit of metallic leather.

Jewelry

Earrings

Next year’s earing trends favor big ones. Think really, really huge ones. The favored look appears to be tribal. So get yourself a huge, tribal pair.

Necklaces

Like earrings, the recently concluded runways shows favored the really, really big, really, really intricate ones.

Decades

Eighties

Some designers seem hellbent on bringing the eighties back. Conjure up memories of your 80s accessories. Perhaps you can resurrect some from your secret stash.

Seventies

Another favorite decade to get inspiration from. The seventies feel was also all over the runways. Don’t forget your plaids and of course, your huge sunglasses.

Twenties

The twenties were another source of inspiration for the 2009 spring-summer catwalks. Bring back to life your mom’s or grandma’s chunky 20’s accessories.

Fabulous Heels

Killer heels are a given. They should be part of every fashionista’s wardrobe. Next spring, go for the really high (really killer) ones. Think Prada.

The trend, as noted by People, are fur accessories: fur stoles, fur capelets, or little fur jackets. Just wear them over what you’re already wearing. Remember, they are “fur accessories”, which means they won’t actually keep you that warm when you step out.
